Car Rental in Corfu – What You Need to Know
Thinking of renting a car in Corfu? It’s one of the best ways to explore the island—but a few local tips will make your experience much smoother.
Should you rent a car?
Corfu may look small (64 km long), but getting around takes time—especially if you want to discover hidden beaches and mountain villages.
Our advice:
If you want freedom and flexibility → rent a car.
When and how to rent
There are many rental options across the island.
- Long stays / full island exploration: book in advance (airport pickup is easiest)
- Short stays: you can arrange it directly at your resort
Prices & Insurance
Prices vary by season and car type:
- Low season (Apr–May, Oct): cheaper
- High season (Jul–Aug): can reach €100/day even for small cars
Insurance matters:
- Basic insurance often does NOT cover wheels, mirrors, or undercarriage
- Full insurance costs more—but is strongly recommended
Local Vs international companies
International companies:
- Newer cars
- Require credit card + deposit (often €500–€1000)
- Strict conditions → always check before booking
Local companies:
- Usually no deposit required
- Pay by cash or card (cash is often cheaper)
- Cars are older but perfectly functional
Which car to choose?
In Corfu, smaller is better:
- Easier to drive on narrow roads
- Much easier to park
But consider luggage—if you’re 4–5 people, don’t go too small.
Manual or automatic?
- Manual cars are more common and better for steep roads
- Automatics are fewer and more expensive
Important:
If you only drive automatic, don’t try learning manual here.
Fuel & gas stations
- Cars are usually petrol
- Return the car with the same fuel level
Good to know:
- Gas stations are full-service (no need to get out)
- Cards are accepted—but sometimes don’t work
- Most close by 23:00
- Fewer stations in the mountains → fill up early
Parking tips
Parking in Corfu Town can be tricky:
- Paid parking: ~€3–4/day (often full in summer)
- Free parking exists—but expect a short walk
- Old Town: no entry by car
Important rules:
- Don’t park in taxi/bus/disabled spots
- Fines = license plates removed or towing
- If it happens → contact your rental company
Pro tip: Always fold your mirrors when parked.

Driving here is… an experience 😊
- Go slow (limits: 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h outside)
