Corfu Wine – Local Grapes & Hidden Wineries
Corfu is not only about beaches and villages—it also has a quiet but rich wine tradition waiting to be discovered.
In most taverns across the island, you’ll be served simple homemade wine.
But for true wine lovers, Corfu offers something more special: unique local grape varieties and small family wineries with deep tradition.
Two of the island’s most important native grapes are kakotrygi and skopelitiko. Kakotrygi, in particular, is considered a historic variety—some even say it is the wine King Alcinous offered to Odysseus, and it was praised in ancient writings by Xenophon.
Local wineries to discover
Corfu’s wine scene is small, authentic, and deeply personal. Here are some wineries worth knowing:
Nikolouzos Winery
A highly respected producer in Ano Korakiana. Around 95% of production is exported, often sold in advance—so finding a bottle locally is a real treat.
Livadiotis Winery
A welcoming winery where visitors can taste wines on-site and purchase directly from the producer.
Borovino Winery (Lefkimmi)
A very small production winery making up to 10,000 bottles per year—rare, limited, and highly local.
Pontiglio Winery
A small family winery near Lefkimmi, known for relaxed tastings and stories shared directly by the winemakers.
FINAL TIP
Corfu wine is not about mass production—it’s about character, family tradition, and discovering bottles you won’t easily find anywhere else.
If you have the chance, don’t just drink it—listen to the stories behind it.
